ESTRANGEIRIZAÇÃO E DOMESTICAÇÃO: UMA ANÁLISE DA TRADUÇÃO DE “A REAL DURWAN”, DE JHUMPA LAHIRI, PARA A LÍNGUA PORTUGUESA

Resumo

Este estudo tem por objetivo analisar a tradução, para a língua portuguesa, do conto “A Real Durwan” (1999), de Jhumpa Lahiri, — realizada por José Rubens Siqueira e intitulada “Um Durwan de Verdade” (2019) —, a fim de identificar quais as estratégias de tradução empregadas pelo tradutor, sobretudo, no que se refere aos marcadores culturais presentes no referido conto. O desenvolvimento desta pesquisa é de cunho descritivo, explicativo e bibliográfico, tendo como suporte teórico estudiosos da tradução, dentre eles André Lefevere (2006), Edwin Gentzler (2009), Heloísa Gonçalves Barbosa (1990) e Lawrence Venuti (1995;1996). Para embasar as discussões acerca dos marcadores culturais, esta pesquisa contou com pressupostos sobre esta temática desenvolvidos por Francis Henrik Aubert (2006). A análise aqui proposta foi realizada por meio do cotejamento entre o texto fonte, em inglês, e sua tradução para a língua portuguesa. Assim, foi possível comprovar a hipótese deste estudo, isto é, que Siqueira adotou as estratégias de domesticação e de estrangeirização para traduzir os marcadores culturais presentes no conto de Lahiri.

ABSTRACT: This study aims to analyze the translation, into Portuguese, of the short story “A Real Durwan” (1999), by Jhumpa Lahiri, — carried out by José Rubens Siqueira and entitled “Um Durwan de Verdade” (2019) —, to identify which translation used by the translator, above all, regarding the cultural markers present in the local story. The development of this research is of a descriptive, explanatory, and bibliographic nature, having as theoretical support scholars of translation, among them André Lefevere (2006), Edwin Gentzler (2009), Heloísa Gonçalves Barbosa (1990) and Lawrence Venuti (1995; 1996). This research had assumptions about this theme, developed by Francis Henrik Aubert (2006) to support as responsible for cultural markers. An analysis proposed here was carried out by comparing the source text, in English, and its translation into Portuguese. Thus, it was possible to prove the hypothesis of this study, that is, that Siqueira adopts as a strategy of domestication and foreignization to translate the cultural markers present in the tale of Lahiri.
