Precipitation is one of the most important hydrological variables, due to its influence on socio-environmental dynamics, and is usually characterized through intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relationships. This characterization is essential for the management of water resources. Therefore, the objective of the work is to verify the most intense rainfall in the city of Barra do Piraí in the period from 2010 to 2020 using the IDF methodology and data from rainfall stations in the cities of Barra do Piraí and Valença, correlating them with the events of floods recorded in the media. For the calculation of recurrence and probability of rain, an existing curve based on the historical series of precipitation in Barra do Piraí was used. Flood events that took place in the city were highlighted. It was observed that heavy rains occurred in the first 24 hours in all evaluated years and the highest value found was for a maximum precipitation of 121.2 mm/day, with a probability of reoccurring only 11.7%. Even with the evaluation of two pluviometric stations for the determination of floods, it was verified that other events can contribute to the increase of river flow and consequently cause flooding even without the identification of precipitation through the installed pluviometric station.
