The present work proposes to discuss the insertion and the challenges of the development of spatial thinking and geographic reasoning in the new National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), as well as the use of new tools and methodologies used in the teaching of Geography to overcome the challenges and consolidate these two educational principles referring to geographical knowledge. It can be noticed that the two great principles established are very distant from the pedagogical practices sought in the document, and that this is due to the inadequate treatment of spatial thinking and geographic reasoning, considered by many authors as a document that empties the epistemological debate, thus limiting its articulation with the objectives and development of more effective practices. In the midst of challenges, geotechnologies appear as great potentializes in the development of spatial thinking and geographic reasoning, since they have strong articulations with the act of observing and understanding landscape transformations, for example. The BNCC has a limited reference to geotechnologies, proving the limiting nature of the instructional point of view – which ends up, therefore, distancing theoretical and practical knowledge. Thus, it is worth highlighting the need to discuss the guiding documents of Brazilian education, not succumbing to the transfer of responsibilities from the State to educators.
