PROTESTANTISMO E IMPERIALISMO NO CHACO PARAGUAIO: UMA CONSTATAÇÃO A PARTIR DA LEITURA SOBRE O RELATO DO MISSIONÁRIO WILFRED BARBROOKE GRUBB

Resumo

Este texto foi motivado pela leitura do artigo “Grubb, missionário & etnógrafo no Chaco paraguaio”, de autoria do professor Hélio Rocha sobre o relato do missionário e etnógrafo Wilfred Barbrooke Grubb no Chaco Paraguaio. O objetivo foi o de constatar ações imperialistas nas estratégias do missionário protestante. Para tanto, foi utilizada a pesquisa bibliográfica tendo-se como base teórica os estudos dos historiadores Bloch (2001); Michel De Certeau (2010); Hobsbawm (1988); e Said (1995) e dos teólogos Alves (1982) e Biéler (1999). Nessas obras, foram subsidiadas a definição dos conceitos de história, imperialismo e protestantismo, que nortearam a análise dos dados da pesquisa. A partir dessa análise, ficou constatado que o protestantismo, não importando suas origens ou características, foi utilizado como estratégia para a colonização de mentes conforme os interesses da nação imperialista.

ABSTRACT: This text is the result of an analysis of the article “Grubb, missionary & ethnographer in the Paraguayan Chaco”, by Professor Hélio Rocha on the account of the missionary and ethnographer Wilfred Barbrooke Grubb in the Paraguayan Chaco. The objective was to verify imperialist actions in the strategies of the Protestant missionary. For this purpose, bibliographic research was used, having as a theoretical basis the studies of historians Bloch (2001); Michel De Certeau (2010); Hobsbawm (1988); and Said (1995) and the theologians Alves (1982) and Biéler (1999). In these works, the definition of the concepts of history, imperialism and Protestantism were subsidized, which guided the analysis of the research data. From this analysis, it was found that Protestantism, regardless of its origins or characteristics, was used as a strategy for the colonization of minds according to the interests of the imperialist nation.
