Abstract

The development of the state of Rondônia caused numerous environmental problems such as deforestation caused by the three migratory waves that occurred in the territory. Policies were created to combat the environmental deterioration; however, they were not enough to face it. The purpose of this article is to report the use of the territory of Rondônia by cattle ranching, which began with the last migratory wave, induced by colonization projects namely: Integrated Colonization Projects (PIC) and Directed Settlement Projects (PAD), at the same while the state's economy was benefiting, the transformation of the Amazon Forest into pasture areas was taking place. The methodology used was the bibliographical one to describe the migration in the territory of Rondônia and the documental one from the main occupation programs and policies in the state. The results indicate that the occupation that took place between 1970 and 1980 brought the largest number of migrants to the territory of Rondônia, intensifying cattle raising and increasing deforestation.
