Abstract

The amount of water available for use must be observed, however, the quality is not less important, being one of the main factors to maintain human health. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the physical-chemical parameters of water from shallow wells located in rural settlements in the municipality of Presidente Médici-RO. As a quality criterion, the values analyzed were compared with those established by the current legislation of the Ministry of Health (MS) which establishes the standards for potability of water intended for human consumption. The study was carried out in the Chico Mendes I and II Settlements, which are composed of five agrovilas, three in Settlement I and two in Settlement II, respectively. In each agrovila, 3 shallow wells were analyzed, totaling 15 wells, being called P1 to P15. Water samples were taken from December 2016 to May 2017. Hardness data (mg/L CaCO3) were obtained by titration with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Turbidity data (NTU) were obtained with a turbidimeter. Data on hydrogen ion potential (pH) and electrical conductivity (uS/cm) were obtained using a multiparameter probe. Nitrite (NO21-) and alkalinity (mg/L) data were obtained with a colorimeter. The results showed that all wells were at some point in the analysis, in non-compliance with the legislation regarding hardness, turbidity and pH. Values for nitrite were below the maximum allowed in all analyses; conductivity and alkalinity were in agreement with expected values.
