CEMITÉRIO DOS AFLITOS AND THE BURIAL OF BLACK MEMORIES IN THE LIBERDADE NEIGHBORHOOD IN SÃO PAULO

This paper aims to understand and analyze the Liberdade neighborhood, in São Paulo, as a field of disputes that occur between the neglect and forgetfulness of centuries of black and indigenous history and the overvaluation of the presence and oriental culture. From the existence of the Cemitério dos Aflitos and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Almas dos Aflitos, symbols of the black presence in Liberdade, it was realized that policies are perpetuated that aim to erase black and African memory, which are suppressed in the face of the mischaracterization of a “typical” Japanese neighborhood. The Liberdade neighborhood, then, becomes a territory that houses two opposing and conflicting worlds, where one of them is buried and forgotten.
