Remote sensing can help raise public awareness of environmental and climate issues. On the one hand, images are much more intuitive to read than maps, despite the vertical view, making them accessible to people with no technical skills. Secondly, the interpretation of the images can be enriched by empirical knowledge of the local environment, which is very well known to farmers, fishermen and other traditional communities, enabling academic research to benefit from data collected by local people, in line with the principle of Volunteer Geographic Information (VGI). Building on previous experience, the Observatório Popular do Mar (OMARA) is using this potential to involve local people in environmental studies of the mouth of the Amazon.
