Niketche:

das representações de gênero ao mulherismo africana

Abstract

This article discusses gender and class conflicts in Niketche, uma História de Poligamia, by the Mozambican writer Paulina Chiziane (2004). The objectives are: 1) to problematize some gender representations; 2) to investigate some episodes that stress the construction of the female gender as a submissive figure; 3) problematize some religious aspects that legitimize male hegemony; and 4) discuss scenes from the narrative in which the wives, led by Rami, organize themselves and rehearse possible ruptures in the patriarchal colonial world of Mozambique searching for their autonomy. It is a bibliographic work in the theoretical perspective of African womanism, Hudson-Weems (1993), Connel's gender studies (2000) and Welzer-Lang (1995).
