CONSIDERATIONS ON THE GEOGRAPHICAL RENAMING OF MUNICIPALITIES OF ESPÍRITO SANTO

The article focused on identifying cases in which municipalities in the state of Espírito Santo went through the process known as geographic renaming, or, as IBGE calls it, toponymic change. The text debates how the issue of renames can be significant for the communities involved, since the toponyms are endowed with meanings for them. In addition, the article provides details on the renominations carried out in the state, such as the transition of taxonomies of toponyms (according to the model proposed by Dick, 1992), the languages used, the dates of the changes and their motivations, the spatial distribution and the temporal context in relation to the emancipations that occurred. Finally, it discusses some of the preferences adopted in the act of promoting such renames.
