POTABLE WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION SEWAGE IN EXTRATIVIST RESERVES IN BRAZILIAN AMAZON: A CASE STUDY IN ÁGUA BRANCA DO CAJARI-AP

This study examines the challenges of access to potable water and sanitation in the extractive reserves of the Brazilian Amazon, focusing on the Água Branca do Cajari community in Amapá. Semistructured forms were used to gather data on population demographics, education levels, water supply, storage, treatment methods, sanitation, and income sources. Additionally, in situ observations were conducted. Water samples intended for human consumption were collected during two periods, 2015 and 2022, and analyzed for parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, total coliforms, Escherichia coli, ammonia, and nitrate. The results highlighted significant issues with water access, both in terms of quantity and quality, as well as inadequate environmental management of sanitation, which compromises the community’s environmental health. In both sampling campaigns, the study found non-compliance with potable water standards as outlined in Portaria M.S nº 888/2021. Notably, contamination by total coliforms and/or Escherichia coli was observed in 90% and 80% of the samples, respectively, across the years 2015 and 2022. This indicates the low effectiveness of the social technologies implemented to provide safe water to the population. Although the Sanear Amazônia Project did not significantly improve water quality indicators or reduce the access deficit, it contributed to the installation of bathrooms near or within residences, thereby enhancing household infrastructure and sanitary conditions in the community.
