In this work, a contextualization of the historical process of the textbook was made to understand its importance in teaching. A Geography textbook from the Avançar/SEDUC-AM project was analyzed with the following methodological procedures: as a parameter, the elements of analysis proposed by Castrogiovani and Goulart, the competences foreseen in the BNCC and the Amazonian Curricular Reference proposals were observed. It was verified that the textbook corresponds to the foreseen competences and proposals, and serves as an introduction for the development of specific skills. However, the book presents the subjects proposed for the themes of the units in a superficial way; illustrates some issues with maps, but does not address content related to cartographic concepts and projections; many loose figures related to the themes were found, but without description or name in the texts; and contextualization boils down to information and quantitative data. The opportunities identified in this analysis can be used to improve future editions of the Avançar project book.
