intellectual property, the gender gap and the Matilda effect

The article seeks to contribute to an understanding of the participation of women in patenting activities in Brazil, based on the intellectual production data of researchers at the Universidade Federal de Campina Grande (UFCG). This university was chosen because of the effort to carry out an X-ray of gender conditions at this institution and because it leads national patent rankings. Recent research, such as Costa (2015) and Silva (2020), indicates that there are serious problems of gender inequality in the field of intellectual property in Brazil, Latin American countries and the world. At UFCG, on the other hand, we found data on patent registrations that indicate a significant participation by women. By collecting and analyzing this data, we set out to produce gender indicators related to scientific production and also to understand how this data contributes to understanding the conditions of gender inequality in the production of science in Brazil.
