The objective of this study is to present mediation strategies for the development of algebraic thinking in children in the first year of elementary school in a municipal public school in Fortaleza (CE). The methodology is qualitative. The subjects are 22 first-year elementary school students. For data collection and analysis, observation and video recording of mathematics classes were used. The work developed from a project with objectives aligned to the Algebra thematic unit. The activities used concrete and playful materials, proposing repetitive sequences in order to observe patterns and regularities. Some children noticed immediately, others took a while to notice regularities and make generalizations. It is considered that the mediation enabled students to organize their thoughts using manipulable material and that the classes aroused their interest, resulting in the elaboration of hypotheses about patterns and explanation of the criteria established to complete the sequences.
