SPATIO-TEMPORAL SPREAD OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN THE STATE OF RIO GRANDE DO NORTE, BRAZIL

The most recent pandemic to hit the world was COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which emerged at the end of 2019 in Wuhan, China, arriving in Brazil in February 2020. In this context, this work aims to understand the spatio-temporal spread of COVID-19 in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, based on the state and interstate flows generated through the federal highways that cut through the state. To do this, we analyzed the spread of COVID-19 in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, from March to October 2020. Initially concentrated in urban areas, with infrastructure such as airports and federal highways, the disease has spread to rural regions over time. This reflects the influence of population flows and transportation networks on the spread of the virus. The results highlighted those cities with greater centrality, such as Natal and Mossoró, were the first foci of infection, but the virus quickly spread to smaller municipalities along the highways and through social interactions. The temporal analysis revealed peaks of confirmed cases and deaths, influenced by factors such as pandemic control measures, hospital capacity and the population's behavior in relation to preventive measures. It was concluded that a spatial and temporal approach is important for understanding the dynamics of COVID-19 and planning more effective responses. These interpretations are fundamental to guiding public health policies, adapting them to the particularities of each region and ensuring an integrated and agile approach to combating future pandemics.
