THE SPACES OF THE HOUSE IN VERMELHO AMARGO: MEMORIAL EXILE OF PAIN

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the configuration of the domestic space of the house in the novel Vermelho Amargo by Bartolomeu Campos de Queirós, conceiving it as an exile for the traumatic memories of the narrator-character. The investigation problematizes the house’s ability to evoke painful reminiscences, consolidating itself as a symbolic refuge of the past within the narrative structure. The methodological approach is grounded in the study of the compositional resources of space, treated as a functionally active narrative category. The theoretical framework, supported by the contributions of Brandão (2013), Borges Filho (2007), Lins (1976), and Dimas (1985), makes it possible to apprehend the spatial dimension in the work. The results indicate that maternal loss resignifies the family environment as a territory of pain and introspection, making space a central element in the constitution of subjectivity and in the architecture of the novel.
