Abstract

ABSTRACT: In “Geographies”, by Mario Benedetti, a short story published in 1984 in a book of the same title, we can analyse the relationship established by the Uruguayan character, a political exiled in France along with the spaces represented in his memories. The experience of exile is treated from a decentered point of view, which is evidenced by the plural used in the title that points to this variety of approaches and spatial perspectives. In addition to the sense of exile as a territorial distancing from the place to which one belongs, the work also addresses in a metaphorical way the displacements that take place in the internal structure, in the mental condition of the character through the relationship established with people from the past and with the body itself as a temporal and spatial delimiter. Therefore, the spatial (BARTHES; BACHELARD; AUGE) and temporal (BERGSON) categories will be explored in order to demonstrate the memory of spaces in displacement in the short story.
