GEOGRAPHICITIES OF THE JURUÁ: THE PERCEPTION OF THE PLACE OF THE RIVERSIDE DWELLERS OF THE PORTO ALEGRE COMMUNITY, IN IPIUNA-AM

Abstract

The text sets out to analyze the phenomenological concept of place in relation to the narratives of the residents of the riverside community of Porto Alegre. This community belongs to the municipality of Ipixuna-AM, and is located on the right bank of the Juruá river, just opposite the town. In this way, the research began with a bibliographical review, based on Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology and authors from the field of phenomenological Cultural Geography, such as Eric Dardel, Edward Relph, Yi-Fu Tuan, Anne Butimen, Paul Claval, Werther Holzer, Amélia Regina Batista Nogueira and others. It also used a qualitative approach and a descriptive/exploratory approach. As for the procedures, interviews and forms with semi-structured open questions were used with four of the oldest families in the community. From this perspective, the work focuses on analyzing and understanding the perception and geography of the river dwellers with regard to their Place (lived world), their way of life, notions linked to the perspective of humanist-cultural geography, seeking to understand, through the residents' perception of place, what it is to be a river dweller. This is the result of research carried out between 2023 and 2024, based on interests related to readings about the authors. The riverside dwellers' perception of place is imbued in the experiences mediated by the dynamics of life on the banks of the Juruá, by the coming and going of the canoes, climbing the ravine, fishing, planting, among other things.
