This article discusses the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, between 2020 and 2022, in the municipality of Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil. Data were collected virtually through Google Forms, WhatsApp, and Instagram Direct, involving 102 respondents, and subsequently translated into word clouds using Wordclouds.com. Socioeconomic data were used to spatially map respondents within the urban area, enabling an understanding of the geographic distribution of the reported perceptions. The phenomenological perspective applied to the CSD allowed a deeper comprehension of the different perceptions regarding well-being, urban experiences, and feelings of insecurity during the pandemic, as well as the psychological and emotional impacts resulting from social isolation. Since the perception of a given place varies from person to person, the phenomenological approach contributed to interpreting the relationship between individuals and public spaces, identifying the cultural phenomena that shape their use and the effects of the absence of physical contact — both between people and with the surrounding environment — during this period. The results indicate that the use of public spaces in Porto Velho is driven by environmental potential, infrastructure quality, and feelings of safety, which are directly associated with topophilic or topophobic experiences of place.
