Abstract

Abstract: This article analyzes the relationship between memory and space in the work Vermelho amargo [Bitter Red] (2017), by Bartolomeu Campos de Queirós, examining concepts that make it possible to understand the articulations between these categories based on the narrator’s discourse and on the work itself, understood as a space of language, that is, as environment and ambience in which the author reflects on his memories. The domestic space and its elements mobilize the characters within their memorial repertoire. From a methodological standpoint, the study consists of a bibliographic review encompassing the concept of the chronotope in Mikhail Bakhtin (2018), literary space in Luis Alberto Brandão (2013), the notion of space in modern physics in Max Jammer (2009), and The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard (1978), in addition to the theoretical contributions of Susanne Langer (2011) and Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2020) for the study of memory. The study assumes that space remains underexplored in literary studies, considering that, in articulation with memory and narrative, it exceeds geographical limits and contributes to the preservation of physical spaces subject to the action of time, being perpetuated in the memories narrated by the author-character.
