This research concerns in to locate and map the areas with vineyards planted in the municipalities producing Vitis vinifera in the Geoviticultural Region of Alto Jacuí/RS, and to characterize them at terrain level, mapping and quantifying attributes such as altitude, slope, slope orientation , lithology and soils, in order to provide subsidies for surveying areas with potential for defining terroirs. The terroir element method was applied, which consists of collecting data on the planted area of Vitis vinifera, the varieties produced, their location and the classification of geographical attributes (altitude, slope, slope orientation, geology and pedology) of the vineyards. With the use of digital cartographic base, satellite images and field work in loco was necessary. Data showed that grape production in the area started in 1995, and there are currently sixty rural properties, which add up to almost two hundred hectares of planted area. The vineyards are located at altitudes that vary between 300 and 800 meters above sea level, in areas with predominant declivity and 10 to 15 degrees, with predominantly Northern and Eastern slopes, on volcanic substrates and volcanic soils with high content of clay. It is hoped that these results may provide, in the future, subsidies for the survey of areas with the potential to define terroirs in the Geoviticultural Region of Alto Jacuí/RS.
