The myth of the goddess Pirichuchio
between fiction and reality

In the Bolivian Amazon, a long oral tradition remains among the indigenous/peasant communities. Hence, much of the legacy of ancient cultures has been transmitted to us through myths, stories and legends. Among these, one of the most outstanding is that of the “pirichuchio”. Narrative that has persisted, five centuries in the collective memory, since a short time ago an event of the encounter of a community member with an exceptional being was presented, which she and the her community attributed to be that magical being. The text presented here relates two versions of the myth (17th and 20th centuries). The main theme is not only the fabled, fanciful narrative of the origin of the pirichuchio, what is essential is its relationship with the entry of conquerors from the Tahuantinsuyu Empire into the area. The myth would evoke the resistance that the inhabitants of the Antis, the “chunchos”, could present. This winged being would embody a priest-king, a shaman-king initiated by an amaru (serpent), an Inka coat of arms and a symbol of the East. Both analogies, shaman-king/priest-king, would refer to the organizational forms of these Amazonian societies, as shown by scholars of the Tacana ethnic group.
