Actions to promote scientific literacy in youth and adult education

Abstract

The understanding of words, numbers and sciences gives students autonomy, regardless of their age. This study aimed to describe an educational intervention with students from the 1st segment of the Youth and Adult Education (YAE) in a public school that aimed at scientific literacy for citizenship It was an action research, developed form August until December of 2016, and involved eight students class, three of whom need special educational services, with one teacher, from a State School of Basic Education, in the city of Porto Alegre do Norte, Mato Grosso, Brazil. The activities developed by the science education highlighted the value of school garden, cultivation and use of medicinal plants and the dangers involving self-medication for the increasement of scientific literacy These planned actions aimed at providing a reflection on the contributions of science to its daily life With the accomplishment of this pedagogical intervention, it was possible to verify that the students could understand and established relationships between the contributions of the natural sciences to their lives.
