ITINERARIES OF A PENITENTIARY MANAGER: THE TRAVELS OF VICTORIO CANEPPA (1952)

Using as research sources the magazine A Estrêla: Organ of the Central Penitentiary of the Federal District, the Chronicle of organization and development and the Book of Abstracts of the 1st Hispano-Luso-American and Filipino Penal and Penitentiary Congress (Madrid, 1952), The objective of this work is to bring to light the trips that Victório Caneppa made on the occasion of the Congress, to Spain and Portugal, as well as to reflect on his participation in that event. Caneppa was director of the Central Penitentiary of the Federal District, editor of the magazine A Estrêla and traveled to know penal establishments in several countries. In view of the above, this article seeks, through documentary analysis, to bring together the discussions that involved the prison system in various countries during the period studied here. The fate of this subject revealed the search for a space as a privileged interlocutor and policy maker.
