From migration to graduation: rural schools and Illiteracy in the Municipality of ituiutaba, MG, 1940-60

Illiteracy, based-on-rhizoculture economic rise and rural migration marked Ituiutaba municipality during the 1940s and 60s. This study shows an understanding of the interrelations of these phenomena. It considers the creation of rural schools by questioning what did the government do as to rural population’s schooling? To answer this question, the research relied on statistical data, minutes, oral accounts and photographs. Results show the local government may even have made more investments in urban and rural schools with resources from agricultural development; but it wasn’t enough to reduce illiteracy. Ituiutaba city may have had a population with high literacy rates, but the number of illiterate people in the countryside reversed negatively such high rates.References
